Andrea Myklebust and Stanton Sears started farming in 2011 with a flock of Shetland and Icelandic sheep. In 2012, Andrea planted her first plot of flax, and her work with handmade linen began. Over the years, the flock has grown to an average of 35 animals, with an emphasis on diverse fleece types and high-quality wool production for handspinners, weavers, and other makers utilizing natural fibers.
In 2017, Andrea was awarded a USDA SARE grant to explore local linen production and the feasibility of a small-scale scutching mill in the Midwest. Andrea began growing fiber hemp in 2023 in partnership with the University of Vermont. She is a member of the North American Linen Association, The Hudson Valley Textile Project, and serves on the Bast Committee of the Northern New England Fibershed, a regional affiliate active in Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. In recent years she conducted bast fiber research at the Smokey House Center in Danby, VT.
In February 2024, Andrea was awarded a second USDA SARE grant to study the production of fine, long-line hemp fiber through a series of variety trials, retting experiements, and selective harvesting of male and female plants. Andrea has taught hand textile-making topics at the North House Folk School in Grand Marais, MN, The Vesterheim Museum in Decorah, IA, the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC, and the Marshfield School of Weaving and the Weavers Croft in Marshfield, VT, and other venues. Andrea and Stan have worked as sculptors in the public realm for many years.
